Avocado Seed Awesome

avocado seed placecard holder 3

Using things either from nature or from other facets of your party make for great accessories.  I might be just a little nostalgic about the fact that this same week for the last couple years we’ve been in Mexico, and we aren’t this year, so whipping up a big batch of guac for a little Mexican party was in order.

I was admiring the seeds of some avocados when I thought that there must be something I could do with them.  You could probably spray paint anything gold and I’d love it, but in this case, I thought the little gold details on each one of these avocado seed place card holders helped to differentiate each name from the next, but also made them shiny and pretty like a little trinket that your friends could take home.

So I’m in a Mexico mood and after instagramming a photo of my new Truly Mexican cookbook the other day, the huge response about where folks could purchase the book made me want to giveaway a copy along with some other ‘south of the border’ inspired goodies like an avocado peeler and pitter tool and more!

Avocado Seed Workflow

ONE tape off the section of the pit that you’d like to be gold. TWO make sure the entire section is covered in tape. THREE spray the exposed section with the color of your choice. FOUR cut a very slim ‘V’ slit into the top of the seed for the place card.

You have all of the makings of a fiesta!  I think these would make awesome holders to label different foods in a Mexican buffet too!

Now for the giveaway!  THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED and the winner has been notified!

This is such a cute and easy idea! I love it! I am completely obsessed with avocados and eat avocado toast at least once a week for breakfast so it wouldn’t even take that long for me to get enough to do this!

Thanks for the giveaway! I would die for an I <3 Avocados shirt – where can you buy one?I think my favorite Mexican dish would have to be chilaquiles – they're a fun and different way to do brunch.

I also pinned this DIY on my Pinterest (username is vivecamarie) and tweeted (@Viveca_Marie).

    Seriously ingenius DIY!
We have a Cinco de Mayo party every single year and if hard pressed I would say my favorite thing to make and eat are Chicken Enchiladas. My husband would tell you without hesitation that Mexican Hot Dogs are his hands down favorite – he’s already requested them for this year’s party!

  3. says

Truly thinking outside the box with this one! Love how upscale they look with a little gold paint!

My favorite Mexican dish is Beef Enchiladas made with leftover chili. My dad taught me how to make it and I request it EVERY time I go home!

  4. Jackie says

You are so creative!! I love mexican food but I think my favorite are tortas from this little mexican place nearby. They are just simple and perfection!

  5. Erin S says

    So creative!

Mmm, I love avacados… so I would have to say my favorite dish is guac!

    Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

  6. Kristen says

Mexican food is my favorite so it is hard to choose a favorite. I would say shrimp fajitas with a side of guacamole!

  7. Jamie says

These are so cute! Especially since I learned that it is a total myth that the seeds keep your guac from turing brown!

My favorite Mexican dish is probably mole sauce. I had it when I was visiting a friend in Oaxaca and I fell in love! It is so delicious and complx, I could almost drink it!

  8. Jamie says

I also pinned this project because I can’t wait to make these for a Mexican fiesta! Maybe Cinco de Mayo!

  9. Jade says

MMmmmm. I love making veggie enchiladas and of course they aren’t perfect until they are topped with avocado :)

  10. Christina Beall says

Chicken fajitas :) and the tee would be adorable for teasing my hubbie with….he really doesn’t understand my love for avocados. :)

  11. says

My favorite Mexican dish is definitely crispy tacos. The way we do it in New Mexico is we deep fry the corn tortilla with cheese coating the outside. Once the cheese is fried, you add the meat and cheese in the inside. It’s so crispy and cheesy… my favorite! And a must is chips & salsa! I’m a salsa FREAAAKKK!

  12. Amy Lueders says

I could easily eat Mexican food every day, but my faves are nachos (queso!!) and fajitas. Thanks for the giveaway!

  13. Kelly H says

adore this giveaway! i truly love every Mexican dish…but chili rellenos are my all-time favorite.

  14. says

What fun! And my favorite dish is kind of a tie between three that always end up on the same tortilla… I’m a HUGE fan of any kind of fajitas, but before I place the meat and veggies on my tortilla, I always love to add just a little fresh guac and refried beans. The combination is delightful and addictive… and I love and hate that there are SO many wonderful Mexican restaurants where I live!

  15. says

Hi! I’m so happy I found your blog (cupcakes and cashmere posted a link today!). I love how you love gold and diy! I just pinned these avocado place holders. My favorite Mexican dish is fish tacos!

  16. Michelle L -GA says

Chilaquiles are my favorite!! Love the use of the avocado seed! I always feel bad throwing them out

  17. says

Great giveaway. Favorite meal, Margaritas, just joking. I love burritos made with fresh shrimp and quacamole, yum. Awesome placecard holders.

  18. says

We love Mexican food!! We only have a few places in Seattle that we feel live up to our Florida standards, so we make our own Mexican food regularly. Fresh guacamole with rice and black beans are a staple. But my favorite meal will always be fish tacos with baja sauce and cabbage.

  19. Holly Duke says

I love anything Mexican! My favorite would just have to be a chicken quesadilla with grilled veggies with melted cheese on top. Yummy!

Isn’t it the craziest when people have similar ideas around the same time! I honestly thought this was a guest post from Lauren (the name on the avocado might have had something to do with that) until I realized that you were using the pits of the avocado instead of the entire avocado! Check out her post: http://www.afabulousfeteblog.com/2013/04/place-card-holder-appetizer-in-one-and.html

Both are such good ideas! And, haha… one could be for a party one week and then the other the next week!

Jenni – I know! It’s even weirder that Lexi from A Proper Pinwheel and I did almost EXACTLY the same thing and posted on the same day! You’d think we were all in cahoots, but instead I think we just all love gold spray paint and parties :)

  21. Sara Smith says

I would be lying if I said anything else than tortilla chips with guacamole – that is why this would be such a perfect giveaway for me! Ok chips and salsa is a easy second iwht palomas coming in third. :)

  22. Gina says

Love, love, love pozole! I’ve never had this dish in the US but down in Mexico, I had the opportunity to have homemade pozole – basically chicken soup with hominy beans, simmered for hours. It’s just so comforting and delicious, the thought of pozole brings me back to Mexico :)

  23. Emma Palmer says

I LOVE the look of the avocado seeds dipped in gold – such a fun/classy table dressing. My fave Mexican dish is guacamole…I could bathe in guacamole…I know. I’m a weirdo.

I also share this on Pinterest : )

  24. Jessica says

Love the place card holders – very creative! Enchilada’s are my favorite and if there’s avocado in them or guacamole on top, even better!

  25. Shyla says

Careful, this is creative but they will rot. use them day of and then toss them unless you will have flaky rotten avacado seeds on your hands.

  26. Joanna says

Now this is something really unique and appealing! I really like the idea how you put the names of the guests on the avocado. Looks classy and absolutely amazing.
I always try making an appetizer for the beginning of the dinner at home, but cleaning the oven every two weeks because of the tremendous amounts of food I cook every day I really hard. The avocado is simple and unique, so it’s definitely gonna catch my guests’ eye! :)
